About Fort Myers, FL
With a historic downtown, a riverfront, barrier islands, beaches and the Gulf at is doorstep, Fort Myers sports a full array of subtropical Florida enticements with nary a theme park – or its teeming throngs – in sight.
Water is the most obvious draw to this city of about 62,000 residents on the southwest coast between Sarasota and Naples. The graceful Caloosahatchee River – named for the Native Americans who ones lived on its shores – meanders along Fort Myers northern flank, separating it from North Fort Myers and Cape Coral.
The Caloosahatchee and the smaller but equally welcoming Orange River to the east and Estero River to the south combine with the Gulf of Mexico to afford many opportunities for year-round swimming and sunning, boating, fishing, kayaking and island hopping.
Fort Myers Beach, a separate small town at the tip of Estero Island, and Sanibel and Captiva Island beckon with miles of renowned sandy beaches, providing prime hunting ground for shell seekers.
On land, the Fort Myers River District, the historic downtown bordering the Caloosahatchee, contains a mix of businesses and governmental offices, art galleries, theaters, boutiques and clubs, restaurants and sidewalk cafes, many occupying buildings that have been restored to their early 20th-century splendor. Art Walks fill the streets with people browsing the galleries, listening to live music, meeting people and mingling.
Baseball fans can cheer for the Boston Red Sox or Minnesota Twins (or their opponents) during spring training games in Fort Myers each March.
